Siaya Green Initiative 2026
Beyond Tree Planting. Towards a Sustainable Green Economy.
Scaling Bamboo Agroforestry, Climate Resilience and Green Economic Opportunities
Siaya Green Initiative 2026 builds on the achievements and lessons of Make Siaya Green Again, Potential X-Factor's community-based environmental restoration initiative.
Implemented by Potential X-Factor Organization, this project aims to strengthen environmental restoration while creating clearer pathways to sustainable livelihoods for young people and communities in Siaya County.
The initiative focuses on bamboo and fruit-tree agroforestry, community nursery development, improved water access, practical training, digital monitoring, and market connections.

Learning From Experience. Building for Sustainability.
Make Siaya Green Again demonstrated the potential of community participation, youth training, nursery development, and agroforestry.
Siaya Green Initiative 2026 responds to these lessons by prioritizing three interconnected needs:
Five Priorities for a Greener, More Resilient Siaya
Build Climate Resilience
Improve water access for nursery and agroforestry activities, including the proposed installation of a solar-powered water pumping system.
Scale Environmental Restoration
Establish a network of bamboo and fruit-tree nursery beds and support tree planting across participating schools and community sites.
Strengthen Local Skills
Provide training and mentorship in nursery management, bamboo production, agroforestry, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Improve Digital Monitoring and Market Access
Develop digital tools to document project activities, support transparent reporting, and connect bamboo growers with potential buyers.
Strengthen Project Management and Accountability
Improve planning, financial documentation, monitoring, and reporting to support effective implementation and responsible use of resources.
Growing Through Schools and Communities
The concept note sets out a proposed network involving schools and community groups.
Through collaboration with participating institutions, the initiative aims to strengthen local ownership, environmental education, and long-term care for planting sites.
The original targets include
- 23 nursery beds across 13 sites.
- Approximately 1,400 bamboo and fruit trees, comprising 1,000 bamboo and 400 fruit trees.
- Training and mentorship involving 10 schools and three community groups.
- Improved irrigation infrastructure to support nursery operations.
- Digital monitoring and an initial pathway to the bamboo market.
These figures represent the original project objectives, not confirmed final achievements.
Preparing School Sites for Sustainable Implementation
In August 2026, Potential X-Factor conducted physical verification visits at five schools that had applied to participate in the initiative.
The verification exercise was an important planning milestone. It did not, by itself, constitute completed tree planting or nursery establishment at the five sites.

Better Planning for Reliable Water Access
Potential X-Factor subsequently engaged Davis & Shirtliff through its corporate social responsibility and technical assessment process.
On 22 September 2026, technical visits were undertaken at two priority locations:
St. Patrick's Ukwala Girls
The assessment identified the need for a hydrological survey before determining the feasibility of developing a borehole and any subsequent water system improvements.
Umala Primary & Junior School
The technical team assessed the existing borehole infrastructure and the possibility of improvements, subject to further technical and CSR decisions.
Any future installations or infrastructure improvements remain dependent on technical feasibility, resources, and the relevant approval processes.
Supporting Better Bamboo Production and Management
Potential X-Factor has also engaged the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) to explore technical collaboration in bamboo production, propagation, management, and training.
As part of this engagement, KEFRI developed a Training of Trainers manual to support a proposed capacity-building program.
The training itself had not yet been conducted at the time of the September 2026 activity report and was deferred pending the necessary resources and arrangements.

The five schools assessed are a documented subset of the proposed wider network; they should not be interpreted as proof that all ten originally targeted schools were onboarded or that planting was completed.

Growing Bamboo. Creating Pathways to Market.
Bamboo is central to the initiative's long-term economic vision.
Marketplace listings will distinguish bamboo that is currently available for sale from plants that are still growing or intended for future harvesting.

Potential X-Factor is also planning a separate fundraising initiative to establish a Bamboo Value Addition Center at its offices.
The center is not an established facility. It is a proposed future initiative that would build on the wider vision of connecting bamboo cultivation, youth skills, product development, and entrepreneurship.
Better Evidence. Stronger Accountability.
Potential X-Factor aims to improve how field activities, nursery sites, planting records, and project outcomes are documented.
Approved information will be shared through project updates and reports so that communities, supporters, and partners can follow progress.
The proposed monitoring system will support records such as
- Site locations and approved location details.
- Nursery establishment and planting activities.
- Seedling quantities and species.
- Dated field photographs.
- Follow-up observations and plant survival.
- Training, visits, and implementation milestones.
- Verified progress against project targets.
Working Together to Strengthen Implementation
Potential X-Factor Organization leads the initiative, building on its collaboration with Let's Plant e.V.
These contributions are described according to their documented scope. Future financial support, training delivery, and infrastructure installation will be reported when confirmed.
